ECVS is an amateur film making club with its own cinema in Fettes Row in the heart of the New Town. All activities are for members only, but we encourage non-members to drop in and come and see what we do. If you come a few times and like it, we will encourage, remind or nag you to join as a member. We don’t bite (unless there is a vampire film in production…)
The summer film making season is now nearly over and the winter season of film study and practical sessions is about to begin. All the film makers are hunkered down in post-production recording their Foley and colour-grading and editing away.
Last year was about building up film making - with script writing courses and an emphasis on building out the film crews. In 2023 the club made 2 films, this summer we got 8 started. This year we want to build out our film study wing and get more film buffs and beginners down to the club.
Film Study
Film study is on a Friday night (mostly) and we have 2 programmes alternating every week.
Film 101 features modern films from around the world where club members chose an important but perhaps not well known film and introduce it.
The other programme is Friday Film Appreciation which looks at mostly British and American films from the 1930s through to the modern day taking in the Golden Age of Holywood.
The films we are studying every Friday this October are:
4th October - The Gorbals Story dir Charles Friend (1943) (Friday Film Appreciation)
11th October - Black Dynamite dir Scott Sanders (2002) (Film 101)
18th October - The Wrong Box dir Bryan Forbes (1943) (Friday Film Appreciation)
25th October - Kill List dir Ben Wheatley (2011) (Film 101)
But of course the 16mm schismatics won’t go along with that and meet once a month on a Tuesday to study proper film, on proper celluloid, no CGI, no gimmics, no special effects, just film making. Their October programme is:
Tuesday 29th October - Seven Up (1964) and And Englishman Abroad dir John Slesinger (1983).
Film making
The summer films that are in various stages of production and post-production are:
All Who Wander
Untitled Bagpipe Documentary
The Bodach
451
The Gatekeeper (Leith Walk)
A Single Frame
Body and Soil
Hard Travelling
The film makers meet every Thursday and the programme is:
3rd October - New Season Opening
10th October - Film Noir Aesthetics
17th October - Lighting Workshop
14th October - Camera Work - a practical session
31st October - Character arc and conflict
The script writing group meets intermittently on a Wednesday.
